“Reform UK Threatens Legal Action Over Tory Mental Health Allegations”

Published on

Reform UK has issued a legal threat against Kemi Badenoch unless she apologizes to Suella Braverman regarding Tory allegations about her mental well-being. Following Braverman’s move to Nigel Farage’s party on Monday, a Conservative representative stated that the party had taken steps to support her mental health but acknowledged her discontent. This critique of Braverman’s mental state sparked criticism, with Conservative peer Lord Jackson denouncing it as “nasty and unpleasant.”

Labour MP Jake Richards condemned the statement, urging respectable Conservatives to denounce it as well. The contentious line was removed from a revised statement sent out later, with the party attributing the initial version to a drafting error.

Nevertheless, Reform’s legal team has written to the Tory office, accusing them of spreading a defamatory smear with malicious intent to harm Mrs. Braverman. They have demanded a public apology from Ms. Badenoch by Friday afternoon, warning that if she fails to comply, Mrs. Braverman will assert her legal rights.

The letter highlights the absence of any public or private apology to Mrs. Braverman and the failure to admit any wrongdoing regarding the accusations made against her. It criticizes the conflation of political disagreements or defections with alleged mental health issues as not only illegal but also ethically damaging. The letter emphasizes that such actions perpetuate stigma, diminish the seriousness of genuine mental health conditions, and exploit fabricated vulnerability for political gain, calling it disgraceful.

The Tory statement criticizing the former Home Secretary was retracted within ninety minutes of its release, with Ms. Badenoch’s office denying her involvement. In response, Ms. Braverman dismissed the comment as “pathetic,” highlighting previous accusations by the Tory leader of her having experienced a “nervous breakdown.”

Mrs. Badenoch admitted the error in the statement, attributing it to an individual within the party and affirming that it was retracted promptly. She condemned the statement as completely inappropriate, emphasizing that such behavior does not align with the party’s values.
