Religious Community Denies Obstructing Police in Crewe

Published on

Residents of a religious community in Crewe have refuted claims of hindering officers during recent raids conducted as part of an inquiry into accusations of sexual abuse, forced marriage, and modern slavery. Over 500 officers participated in executing search warrants at three locations associated with the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light in Crewe on April 29.

In a court appearance at South Cheshire Magistrates’ Court, 24 individuals faced charges related to public order offenses allegedly committed during the raids. Annika Livermore, the prosecutor, informed the court that residents obstructed officers from accessing rooms at Webb House, the community’s central facility, with some individuals forming human chains to impede their progress.

Allegations were made against Dareem Charles for kicking at police shields and throwing objects, while Marc Ferreira was accused of assaulting an officer during an arrest. The eldest defendant, Ramazan Demirovic, aged 59, was reported to have physically resisted officers, pushing against a doorframe and striking an officer.

One of the defendants, Laure Delogne, purportedly hid in a bush when law enforcement entered the premises. The defendants, ranging from 18 to 59 years old, appeared in court individually, with proceedings scheduled to continue throughout the day. Most individuals resided in Crewe, except for Hatem Sider, who claimed a London address. The defendants were of various nationalities, including British, French, Belgian, Iranian, Egyptian, and American.

Following their court appearance, a small group of protesters gathered outside the courthouse, recording the defendants as they arrived. District Judge Ian Barnes granted the defendants unconditional bail until their trials, set for April next year at South Cheshire Magistrates’ Court. Case management hearings were set for September 29.

In a development, the case against Hamidreza Saghari, charged with obstructing a constable, was dropped by the prosecution. Additionally, twelve individuals detained in connection with alleged sexual abuse were released on conditional bail.

The Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light, a sect merging Shia Islam principles with conspiracy theories regarding the Illuminati and extraterrestrial control over US presidents, has been shunned by mainstream Muslim organizations. The community, situated at Webb House, a former orphanage housing around 150 residents, regained access to the site following the completion of police searches in early May.
