Rolling Stones’ Jagger and Richards Adapt Songwriting in Their 80s

Published on

Keith Richards and Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones have changed their songwriting approach as they have aged, opting to bring fully developed songs to the studio to streamline the process. The duo, now in their 80s, no longer enter the studio empty-handed and have pre-written stories ready to go.

In a recent interview discussing their upcoming 25th album, “Foreign Tongues,” Mick, at 82, emphasized the importance of having songs ready before recording. He expressed his preference for preparation over the previous method of going into the studio with minimal ideas, highlighting the benefits of being well-prepared.

This new method marks a departure from the lengthy studio sessions of the past, with “Foreign Tongues” taking only weeks to complete compared to months for previous albums. Mick shared that he now records song ideas directly on his iPhone, simplifying the initial creative process.

Keith, also 82, outlined their collaborative songwriting process, which involves sharing rough musical ideas and coming together periodically to work on them. The long-standing partnership between Jagger and Richards thrives on their individual contributions and mutual support.

Their fellow bandmate, Ronnie Wood, praised their synergy as a songwriting team and emphasized the positive and creative atmosphere in the studio. Keith described his organic approach to creating guitar parts, allowing inspiration to guide his playing.

As they finalize arrangements in the studio, Mick remains hands-on, utilizing drum loops and guitars in his writing process. For the new album, Mick worked closely with drummer Steve Jordan, experimenting with beats and vocal melodies to create a cohesive sound.

The Rolling Stones’ latest insights were shared on the “Speaking In Tongues” podcast, coinciding with the upcoming release of “Foreign Tongues” on July 10. The band’s enduring dedication to their craft and collaborative spirit continues to drive their musical evolution.
