“Scientists Advocate for Fungi Protection at UN Biodiversity Summit”

Published on

A gathering of world leaders at a UN summit is focusing on safeguarding the biodiversity of Earth’s flora and fauna, but a group of scientists is advocating for the protection of another crucial but often overlooked kingdom – fungi. These organisms, which outweigh the world’s animals combined, comprise an estimated 5 million species, ranging from edible mushrooms to tiny organisms vital for ecosystems.

Chilean mycologist Giuliana Furci emphasized the essential role of fungi in sustaining life on Earth, lamenting their historical exclusion from conservation efforts. In response, she established the Fungi Foundation in 2012, pioneering the conservation cause for fungi. The Global Fungal Conservation Network, including entities like Mycosphaera, unveiled the Global Strategy for Fungal Conservation during the COP17 UN biodiversity conference in Armenia.

The ongoing UN summit is monitoring the progress of the 2022 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, aiming to protect 30% of the planet’s land and marine areas by 2030. Despite recognizing the importance of balancing the health of various organisms and ecosystems, the agreement does not explicitly mention fungi, an omission Furci deems outdated since fungi were classified as a distinct kingdom in 1969.

Fungi, crucial for ecosystem functions and biodiversity, face numerous threats such as fungicides, habitat loss, and climate change. The lack of formal identification for many fungi species poses challenges in conservation efforts. However, initiatives like the fungal conservation pledge proposed by the Fungi Foundation and signed by several countries are striving to enhance the recognition and protection of fungi within the global biodiversity agenda.

Understanding the significance of fungi and integrating them into biodiversity monitoring and conservation strategies are crucial steps for ensuring the preservation of these often-underappreciated organisms. By acknowledging the importance of fungi in everyday life and advocating for their conservation, individuals can contribute to safeguarding these vital components of Earth’s ecosystems.
