“Search for New Location for St. John’s Library Faces Setback”

Published on

The search for a new location for a library in the west end of St. John’s has faced a setback, with no submissions received in response to a tender issued by the provincial government. The Michael Donovan Public Library had to close its doors at Waterford Valley Mall two months ago due to the end of its rental agreement. Despite the closure, the library remains missed by its patrons.

Josh Smee, vice-chair of the Friends of the St. John’s Public Library advisory board, expressed frustration and disappointment over the lack of progress in finding a new home for the library. He emphasized the importance of the library to the community and the desire to see it reopened in the west end.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is currently consulting with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries to determine the next steps for relocating the library. Janelle Simms, a spokesperson for the department, confirmed the intention to keep the library in the west end of St. John’s.

Smee urged landlords in the west end to participate in the process and pay attention to future tenders, as potential hosts may have overlooked the previous opportunity. He hopes for a successful outcome in the next round of tendering.

Library patron Juanette Anthony shared her experience of using the Michael Donovan Public Library for computer access and expressed a desire for it to reopen in a larger space with more resources. She highlighted the library’s significance for her and the community.

The closure of the library has left a void in the area, with residents eagerly anticipating its return. The community’s attachment to the library and the valuable services it provides have underscored the importance of finding a suitable new location promptly.
