A woman was stabbed at Holy Cross Church in Summerhill, Tramore, County Waterford, Ireland, just before morning Mass today. The victim, identified as Mary McNamara in her 50s, sustained a single knife wound and was swiftly taken to the hospital for treatment.

Following the incident at around 9:45 am, various units, including armed police from the Armed Support Unit, and paramedics responded promptly. The Gardai reported that the victim suffered severe but non-life-threatening injuries.

According to a local parishioner, Ann O’Connor, who was present during the attack, the victim, Ms. McNamara, was pursued by her assailant in the church. Ms. O’Connor described the victim as a kind and gentle individual.

A man in his 30s, believed to be a white Irish national, was later apprehended at a domestic residence in the vicinity and is presently held at a Garda Station in Co Waterford. The authorities have the right to detain him for up to 24 hours and have confiscated a knife as part of their inquiry.

Although the woman sustained serious injuries, the Gardai assured that her life is not at risk presently. Parish Priest Richard O’Halloran expressed shock over the incident but commended the swift response of everyone involved in handling the situation.

Fr. O’Halloran confirmed that the victim is a well-known member of the parish and deemed the incident as random. He conveyed his and the parish’s prayers for the victim’s recovery.

Authorities are urging anyone who was in the vicinity of Summerhill, Tramore between 9:15 am and 10:15 am on Tuesday, July 21st, to come forward with any relevant information or camera footage.
