Nicola Sturgeon vehemently denied any prior knowledge of her estranged spouse’s misconduct following his admission of guilt in embezzling £400,310 from the SNP. Peter Murrell, a former long-standing party chief executive, confessed to the charges during a court appearance in Edinburgh. The embezzlement took place between August 2010 and October 2022, with Murrell acknowledging a revised indictment that lowered the sum misappropriated from over £459,000.

Expressing a mix of emotions, Sturgeon stated, “The guilty plea entered today by my ex-husband is deeply challenging to articulate. I am experiencing anger, pain, sorrow, and significant distress over the repercussions of his actions on our family, friends, and the SNP.” She added, “Being deceived and let down by a spouse I cared for and trusted has caused me immense anguish. His motives remain incomprehensible to me.”

Sturgeon clarified, “I had no inkling or suspicion whatsoever of his misuse of SNP funds for personal gain. I am utterly shocked by his actions and struggle to comprehend his rationale.” She emphasized, “The thorough investigation that led to my full exoneration underscores that these offenses are not mine. I was misled like others.”

Acknowledging the potential for political discourse in light of the situation, Sturgeon noted, “While I recognize the forthcoming political discussions, this has also been a deeply personal ordeal for me. I must now concentrate on recovering from this trauma and embarking on a new chapter in my life.”
