A woman who is allergic to sunlight has shared her experience of how quickly exposure can trigger severe symptoms, causing her skin to burn, blister, and even peel within just 15 seconds of being under UV rays. Jennifer Broyden, a 24-year-old graduate student, suffers from an uncommon autoimmune condition where her immune system attacks her muscles and skin instead of protecting her, resulting in what is commonly referred to as a ‘sun allergy.’
Jennifer described the physical effects she experiences when exposed to the sun, including burning sensations, rashes, blistering, nausea, dizziness, elevated heart rate, sweating, and feeling overheated. These symptoms subside once she is indoors, but the aftermath often leaves her exhausted and in need of recovery. The condition, which manifested in 2021 as a consequence of her dermatomyositis, a chronic autoimmune disease causing muscle weakness and skin rashes, has made Jennifer’s skin extremely photosensitive, making any sun exposure unbearable.
Initially, Jennifer’s symptoms were misattributed by some doctors to stress or overexertion due to her young age and overall good health. However, as her condition deteriorated, she sought a specialist who correctly diagnosed her with dermatomyositis in December 2021. Sun exposure poses a significant risk to Jennifer’s health, with even brief exposure potentially causing her skin to burn, blister, and peel off, making activities like going to the beach or running outdoors challenging.
Despite the challenges posed by her condition, Jennifer has learned to manage her symptoms by taking precautions such as applying high SPF sunscreen, wearing UV-protective clothing, using a UV umbrella, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak sun hours. The treatments she receives focus on suppressing her immune system to prevent further damage. While her life has undergone significant changes since her diagnosis, Jennifer has found purpose in adapting to her new reality and has built a supportive online community with individuals facing similar challenges.
