As the initial half of competition at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games draws to a close after a whirlwind few days, the pace was particularly intense at the Corner Brook Civic Centre. Athletes in ball hockey from various parts of the province vied for medals on Tuesday.

In the gold medal match, Team Mount Pearl South emerged victorious over Team Avalon with a score of 4-3. Thirteen-year-old Raine Foss from Paradise clinched the winning goal and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I passed it back to the [defence], saw the lane, came through and I buried. It’s great to come and represent MPS. It’s great, this is a once in a life opportunity.”

Raine’s teammate, Reid Swain, shared his excitement about leaving Corner Brook with the gold medal, saying, “We worked at it for the past couple months, and we really didn’t think we were going to pull it out. But we did, and it feels great.”

Although Ryan Walsh from Team Avalon did not achieve the desired medal color, he highlighted the enjoyable memories he will take back from Corner Brook. “It was great, like, staying in school with all the b’ys, and all the other stuff that we did. It was all fun,” he remarked.

Team Central managed to secure the bronze medal, a feat that 14-year-old Jack Stone from Grand Falls-Windsor is proud to bring home. “It’s like, ecstatic, you know? You come into a tournament not knowing how you’re gonna do. To come out with a medal feels good,” Stone expressed.
