In Japan, lions at a zoo have tragically passed away due to suspected heatstroke during an unprecedented heatwave. The casualties included three lionesses, aged three, 11, and 15, at Tama Zoological Park in Hino, Tokyo. The Tokyo metropolitan government and the Tokyo Zoological Park Society confirmed the deaths last week.

The post mortem examination revealed that the lions suffered from severe dehydration and multiple organ failure. The exact cause of their deaths awaits confirmation pending laboratory results. Out of the zoo’s 16 lions, ten required medical attention as temperatures soared in mid-July.

Despite efforts by staff to alleviate the lions’ distress with fans, cold water sprays, and medication, some lions were incapacitated by the intense heat. Consequently, the lion enclosure was closed to the public on July 23. Despite veterinarians’ dedicated work, three lions succumbed to the extreme temperatures, while one female and two males continue to receive treatment.

Japan experienced temperatures exceeding 40C for five consecutive days until July 25, marking the lengthiest heatwave on record. The severe weather conditions prompted Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency to declare it a disaster, a classification typically reserved for earthquakes and typhoons.

The agency reported that approximately 18,600 individuals sought medical attention for heatstroke between July 20 and 26, with 45 fatalities upon arrival. A spokesperson from the zoo stated that while lions are believed to tolerate heat well, the recent rapid onset of intense heat post the rainy season’s end in late July caught them off guard.

The spokesperson highlighted the unique challenge of high humidity accompanying the heat in Japan, contrasting it with the dry heat of Africa. The zoo has been enhancing its heat management strategies in response to Japan’s sweltering summers in recent times.
