A boxer from the UK is currently in a coma after falling from a moving tuk-tuk in Thailand following a dispute over a taxi fare. Colin Cairney, aged 29, sustained severe head injuries during the incident in Phuket’s Patong district over the weekend and is now receiving intensive care at a hospital. Authorities are working to locate the tuk-tuk driver who allegedly drove off after the altercation.

According to investigators, Cairney was returning to his hotel after a night out when a disagreement erupted over payment for the ride. It is reported that he did not have cash on hand, leading to arrangements for him to withdraw money from an ATM nearby.

Security footage indicated that the tuk-tuk passed by The Nature Hotel around 4 am without stopping, later being spotted heading back towards Patong. Police confirmed that Cairney fell from the vehicle, sustaining a critical head injury upon impact with the road. CCTV investigations revealed that there was no evidence of an assault, suggesting that he fell accidentally without any external force.

Emergency services were alerted after Cairney was found injured near a pedestrian crossing on Phra Baramee Road at approximately 4:10 am. He was initially taken to Patong Hospital and then transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for specialized medical care.

Tests for alcohol and drugs have been conducted, although the results are pending release. Authorities have identified the registered owner of the tuk-tuk, who stated that the vehicle was rented out to another individual using it as a taxi. Efforts are underway to locate this driver for further questioning.

In the event of Cairney’s condition deteriorating and resulting in fatality, the driver may face charges such as negligent driving leading to death, failure to stop and assist an injured party, and failure to notify authorities.
