UK Faces Sudden Plunge in Morning Temperatures

Published on

Weather models are indicating a potential drop in morning temperatures to single digits across the UK, possibly reaching as low as 1°C in the coldest regions. This forecast contrasts with predictions from weather experts at the Met Office and MeteoGroup, who have suggested an increased likelihood of heatwaves for the upcoming summer following the unprecedented hot spell experienced in May.

While warmer conditions are expected in the near future, the ECMWF weather model is signaling a forthcoming cold spell starting next week, particularly on Tuesday. The model’s minimum temperature projections show that all regions of the UK could see temperatures below 10°C around 6 am, with the coldest conditions anticipated in northern Scotland at 4°C and even the south-east of England struggling to reach 8-9°C.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, the ECMWF data continues to show chilly temperatures, with Scotland dropping to 2°C and other regions like Northern Ireland, northern and central England, and Wales hovering around 6-8°C. However, the south-east of England might see slightly milder temperatures, touching 10°C.

By Thursday morning, northern Scotland could experience highs of only 1°C, while southern England, especially the south-west, may see improvements with minimum temperatures around 10-11°C at 6 am. Temperature anomaly maps for the following week highlight below-average temperatures nationwide.

The Met Office’s forecast for the upcoming period indicates unsettled weather with frequent showers and potentially long spells of rain, particularly in the northwest. Winds are expected to be brisk, and temperatures are forecasted to be below average. Towards mid-June, there is a possibility of more settled conditions, especially in the south, although wet interludes might still occur. Overall, temperatures are likely to be around normal or slightly above.
