A recent Ebola outbreak has raised concerns among health experts as there are currently no available vaccines or treatments for the deadly virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared this outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring Uganda as a public health emergency of international concern, following over 80 reported deaths and more than 300 suspected cases. The WHO mentioned that while it does not meet the criteria for a pandemic emergency, there is a possibility of a larger outbreak than currently reported.
Health experts highlighted the seriousness of this Ebola outbreak due to its high mortality rate. A laboratory-confirmed case in Kinshasa, over 600 miles away from the epicenter in Ituri province, suggests potential wider spread. Rwanda announced increased border screenings with the DR Congo as a precautionary measure, despite WHO’s advice against border closures.
The outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, has raised alarms among experts. Dr. Anne Cori from Imperial College London emphasized the lack of available vaccines or treatments for this virus, noting its high lethality with an estimated one in three cases resulting in death. The identification of cases in Uganda further underscores the regional significance, prompting the WHO’s declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern to facilitate coordinated response efforts.
However, Dr. Cori clarified that this strain is not a global threat as Ebola is not airborne and requires close contact for transmission through infected bodily fluids, limiting its global spread. Another expert, Clinical Professor Emma Thompson from the University of Glasgow, outlined three reasons for concern among medical professionals: delayed detection due to initial negative tests, infections among healthcare workers signaling gaps in infection control, and the virus’s spread through human mobility networks.
Despite over 20 previous Ebola outbreaks in the region, this marks only the third detection of the Bundibugyo virus. The majority of cases have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with only two cases recorded in Uganda.
