“Woman’s Health Crisis Sparks Legal Battle with Pfizer”

Published on

A woman has come forward with claims of experiencing severe health issues after using a contraceptive injection for more than two decades. Kirsty Moore, aged 37, disclosed that she began using the Pfizer-manufactured Depo-Provera shot at the age of 16 and only stopped earlier this year upon discovering its potential association with meningiomas. In 2021, Kirsty, from Dundee, was diagnosed with a non-cancerous tumour after developing headaches and noticing swelling in her right eye.

Following four surgeries to remove the growing mass on her optic nerve, Kirsty has joined forces with other affected individuals in Scotland to seek compensation from Pfizer. Despite multiple medical interventions, the tumour has continued to reappear, prompting Kirsty to undergo a rigorous six-week radiotherapy program to halt its growth.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Kirsty described the significant impact the tumour has had on her life, emphasizing the physical and mental challenges she faces. She highlighted the lack of warning regarding the potential risks associated with the contraceptive injection and called for stricter regulations on its usage.

Meningiomas are tumors that develop in the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Recent research published in the British Medical Journal in 2024 revealed a substantial heightened risk of meningioma brain tumors in individuals who used Depo-Provera over an extended period.

Around 2,500 women in the US are currently pursuing legal action against Pfizer for compensation, with a group in Scotland also seeking justice through legal avenues. Legal representatives assisting the affected women have emphasized the importance of holding Pfizer accountable for the adverse effects caused by Depo-Provera.

In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for Pfizer reiterated the company’s commitment to patient safety and the continuous monitoring of their products for any reported adverse events. Pfizer stated that Depo-Provera has been approved in numerous countries for several decades, emphasizing its established safety and efficacy profile. The Mirror has reached out to Pfizer for further comments on the matter.
