Zoe Ball, the former host of BBC Radio 2 breakfast show and a potential future presenter of Strictly Come Dancing, has openly discussed the challenges she and her 25-year-old son, Woody, who is also a DJ and TV personality, have faced with ADHD. Zoe has now revealed that her 16-year-old daughter, Nell, also deals with ADHD. Zoe, who shares her children with ex-husband Norman Cook, known as DJ Fatboy Slim, acknowledges that her kids are instrumental in helping her manage her own ADHD. She acknowledges her ADHD struggles, stating, “I always talk about having ADHD.”
Zoe credits her children for enlightening her about their situations and coping mechanisms, which in turn has helped her understand her own ADHD better. Nell, who is navigating through ADHD, experiences challenges with concentration and sitting still due to the unique workings of her brain. Fortunately, new medication has improved Nell’s school performance, enabling her to focus better on her studies and exams.
Living in the Brighton and Hove area of East Sussex with her partner, TV production designer Mathieu Weekes, Zoe affectionately refers to him as “the lodger.” She appreciates the order and calmness he brings to their household, especially with three individuals, including herself, coping with ADHD. Zoe’s acknowledgment of her ADHD diagnosis in December 2023 shed light on her struggles with distractions and the need for order in her life.
Reflecting on her past, Zoe recalls her wild partying days in the ’90s, attributing her behavior to her overactive brain constantly seeking stimulation. However, she now values calmness and solitude, understanding the emotional intensity that individuals with ADHD often experience. Despite Nell’s ADHD, Zoe describes her daughter as intelligent and resilient, expressing confidence in her ability to navigate the challenges of the world.
As a dedicated mother, Zoe cherishes her daughter’s spirited nature while recognizing the need for different approaches in parenting. She acknowledges the importance of adapting to her children’s individualities and personalities as they grow and face life’s complexities.
