“Drivers With 45 Points Still on Roads: RAC Pushes for Tech Solution”

Despite accumulating 45 points on their driving license, some drivers caught speeding are still allowed to drive, thanks to magistrates’ discretion to consider “exceptional hardship” before imposing a ban. This was revealed through a Freedom of Information request from the DVLA by the RAC, showing that 4,154 drivers in the UK have surpassed the point threshold for license revocation but are still legally driving. Among them, 117 drivers have more than 20 speeding points, with two drivers holding 43 and 45 points each. The RAC is backing the Stop Excessive Speeders campaign, advocating for the installation of technology, known as Intervening Intelligent Speed Assistance (IISA), that restricts vehicles from exceeding speed limits, except in emergencies.

The RAC’s research indicates strong public support for implementing measures to curb excessive speeding, with nearly 90% of drivers in favor of such initiatives. Simon Williams, the RAC’s head of policy, expressed concern over repeat speeders continuing to drive despite the risk posed by speeding-related accidents. He suggests equipping offenders with devices that prevent speeding as a more effective solution. The Stop Excessive Speeders campaign spokesperson emphasized the urgent need to address excessive speed, highlighting the public’s understanding of the connection between road safety and combating dangerous driving.

Calling for government intervention, both the RAC and the campaign advocate for the mandatory installation of Intervening ISA devices in vehicles of repeat speeders to enhance road safety and align with casualty reduction targets outlined in the Road Safety Strategy.
