The team behind the popular movie franchise, John Wick, is facing a significant copyright lawsuit. Lionsgate, Thunder Road Films, and writer Derek Kolstad are named in the lawsuit, which claims similarities between the original John Wick film released in 2014 and a screenplay called Blood for Escobar.
The legal action alleges that both works share key elements, including the antagonist escaping only to meet their fate elsewhere in a vulnerable public setting at night. J.R. Wicker, the plaintiff, asserts that Kolstad may have been exposed to his screenplay through a mutual contact.
Wicker is seeking $10 million in profits from the John Wick franchise, citing resemblances between his script and Kolstad’s work that evolved into the John Wick series. The lawsuit suggests that Kolstad might have obtained the script through an intermediary who later facilitated the film’s production deal.
Although John Wick Chapter 5 is in the works, details about its release date, filming schedule, and storyline are undisclosed. The returning cast, apart from Keanu Reeves, remains unconfirmed, with speculations surrounding additional actors. The production team is exploring new ideas for the upcoming installment, emphasizing the creative process over setting specific timelines.
Keanu Reeves, who portrays the lead character in the series, expressed his enjoyment of reprising the role of John Wick due to the character’s complexity and the engaging nature of the films.
