Tourist Killed by Statue Thrown in Naples

Published on

CCTV footage recently captured a tragic incident where a tourist lost her life after being struck by a statue thrown from a balcony while walking with her partner in Naples, Italy. The victim, Chiara Jaconis, aged 30, was hit by the onyx statue, launched by a 13-year-old boy from a third-floor residence, causing fatal injuries.

A distressing video clip depicted the moment when Chiara was hit and fell motionless to the ground while her partner, Livio, looked on in disbelief before calling for help. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene, rushing Chiara to the hospital for emergency surgery. Tragically, despite medical efforts, Chiara succumbed to severe brain injuries two days later.

Chiara, an Italian national working for the fashion brand Prada in Paris, was walking slightly ahead of her boyfriend in Naples’ Spanish Quarters when the tragic incident occurred. The teen responsible for throwing the statue was absolved of criminal liability by a juvenile court due to being under 14 years old, prompting prosecutors to hold the boy’s parents accountable for negligent manslaughter.

The incident has sparked a debate on parental responsibility, especially in crowded areas, and garnered significant attention in Italy. The boy’s parents, facing charges, maintain their innocence, claiming no ownership of the statue nor involvement in the tragic event. They have contested the court’s decision based on their son’s age and are seeking acquittal based on the facts of the case.

The case has raised concerns about the need for increased vigilance in preventing such tragedies and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 26.
