“Drivers Warned: Keep Cars Cool Amid Heatwave”

Published on

Drivers are advised to keep a specific item in their vehicles as temperatures are expected to reach 33C in some parts of the country in the upcoming days. The Met Office has predicted a period of exceptional warmth resembling a heatwave during this bank holiday weekend, with high temperatures continuing until Tuesday and then gradually decreasing from Wednesday.

While many may enjoy the sunny weather, motorists are urged to be cautious. Graham Conway, Managing Director at Select Car Leasing, suggests that drivers should be aware of potential hazards inside their cars, particularly during a heatwave. He emphasizes the importance of being cautious with seat belts, as the metal parts can become dangerously hot in direct sunlight, potentially causing burns, especially for children and pets. Conway recommends keeping a cloth or towel in the car to cover the metal buckle of the seatbelt to reduce the risk of burns.

To stay cool in the scorching heat, Conway advises covering seatbelt buckles with light-colored materials and avoiding direct sunlight exposure. Additionally, he suggests allowing the car to cool down by opening doors and running the air conditioning before driving.

Driving in hot weather can make vehicles feel like ovens, with interiors absorbing and radiating heat. Conway recommends using reflective window covers to prevent excessive heating, especially for cars with leather seats. He also suggests turning the steering wheel to shield the top section from direct sunlight and keeping journeys short with breaks for fresh air and hydration, especially when traveling with children or pets. Moreover, he emphasizes the danger of leaving children or pets unattended in a hot car.

In case of burns, immediate cooling with water is crucial. Clean bottled water can be handy if a sink is not available. Applying a clean, dry dressing afterward is recommended. For further guidance on burn treatment, the NHS website offers valuable information.
