Britain mourns the passing of Frank Chester, its oldest World War Two veteran and one of its most senior citizens at the age of 109. Mr. Chester, who resided in Malvern, Worcestershire, breathed his last on April 19, just nine days after marking his birthday. Hailing from Ludlow, Shropshire, he had a career with HM Customs and Excise before being summoned to serve his nation during the war.

During his service, Mr. Chester navigated the dangers of escorting Arctic convoys to and from Russia aboard a corvette, a perilous task during the wartime. Despite battling sea sickness throughout his naval tenure, his unwavering courage earned him the esteemed Distinguished Service Cross for his continuous acts of valor.

Following the war, Mr. Chester settled in Walsall, where he met his beloved Elizabeth Proud, tying the knot in 1949 and relishing over 50 years of marriage. He dedicated his post-war years to HMRC until his retirement in 1987. Even in his later years, the great-grandfather remained active, volunteering at a local food bank and maintaining his independence well into his centenary.

Known for his longevity, Mr. Chester credited his habit of donning trousers while seated as a key to preventing falls. His remarkable life journey serves as a testament to resilience, bravery, and selflessness, leaving a lasting legacy in the hearts of those who knew him.
