Published on

A well-regarded water polo coach was discovered deceased in his lodging room after hotel staff had to enter forcibly.

Andrew McGinty, aged 34, who was in charge of coaching the England and Great Britain water polo teams, was sadly found deceased at the Village Hotel in Bury on December 18 last year. He had checked in on December 16 and was scheduled to depart two days later.

Upon his failure to check out, staff entered his hotel room by force, which was secured with a chain from the inside. An inquest into his passing revealed that he was found lying on a bed.

The final inquest session took place at Rochdale Coroner’s Court recently. According to the inquest report, the medical cause of his demise was determined as ‘suffocation/asphyxiation.’

Senior Coroner Joanne Kearsley declared that ‘the circumstances surrounding his demise suggest he intentionally took his own life’ as she officially ruled it a suicide, as reported by Manchester Evening News.

Various organizations extended their condolences following his passing. Swim England, the governing body for swimming in England, issued a statement honoring his contributions.

England Water Polo described Mr. McGinty as ‘highly respected’ and highlighted his significant impact on numerous young water polo players in the north-west. They mentioned his success in coaching various GB/England age-group squads and his popularity nationwide.

City of Manchester Water Polo Club (CoM), situated at Manchester Aquatics Centre, expressed that Mr. McGinty had been a crucial member for many years.

Bolton School, where Mr. McGinty served as a longstanding coach, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic news and emphasized his dedication to water polo and the students he mentored.

Living in Higher Blackley, north Manchester, Mr. McGinty also held the position of water polo head coach at the English Schools’ Swimming Association.
