A massive fire has destroyed a chicken farm, creating a significant smoke cloud over a part of Cheshire. Firefighters have dispatched ten fire engines to The Grange on Checkley Lane near Bridgemere. Residents in the vicinity are advised to keep their doors and windows shut due to the extensive smoke emanating from the blaze.
The fire started early in the morning at approximately 6:30 am and has kept firefighters on the scene for over 12 hours. Images released by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service depict a completely charred chicken shed spanning around four acres, equivalent to more than two football fields.
Motorists on the M6 and locals in nearby areas reported witnessing a large smoke plume billowing from the site. Emergency crews have utilized specialized equipment like an aerial ladder platform, water bowser, and high-volume pumps to combat the fire.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue mentioned that firefighters are actively tackling the blaze in an empty chicken shed covering roughly four acres on Checkley Lane. They are employing multiple hose reels and main jets externally to contain the fire and prevent its spread, causing a substantial smoke plume, prompting nearby residents to keep their doors and windows closed for safety.
An update released at 4 pm indicated that the incident had reduced to two fire engines and an HRET appliance, with firefighters continuing to dampen down the scene. Aaron Collis, Area Manager at Cheshire Fire and Rescue, stated that a major incident was initially declared due to the significant smoke plume, but has since been stood down following collaborative efforts by emergency services. The cause of the fire will be investigated jointly with Cheshire Constabulary.
