Political storm looms as UK gov’t to release Mandelson files

Published on

Keir Starmer is set to face further political turmoil as the government readies the release of additional files concerning Peter Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador. Over 1,000 pages of records are expected to be made public on Monday, potentially containing sensitive exchanges between high-ranking officials and the dismissed diplomat. Despite this, it has been revealed that the documents will not address the serious security concerns and objections raised regarding Mandelson’s appointment.

Earlier this year, in response to inquiries about Lord Mandelson’s vetting process and connections to Jeffrey Epstein, the Prime Minister acquiesced to MPs’ demands to disclose the relevant documents. Starmer has expressed regret to Epstein’s victims and accused the former New Labour architect of deception. The ongoing scandal has cast a shadow over Starmer’s administration, drawing criticism from party members and casting doubt on his leadership.

The fallout from the controversy led to the resignation of Starmer’s chief-of-staff, Morgan McSweeney, who played a pivotal role in Labour’s electoral success. McSweeney publicly admitted to advising the Prime Minister on Mandelson’s appointment, taking full responsibility for the decision. Subsequently, the Prime Minister dismissed the Foreign Office chief, Sir Olly Robbins, after revelations surfaced that Mandelson had been appointed as US ambassador despite failing security clearances.

Former minister Jess Phillips, who left the government following Labour’s electoral setbacks, disclosed that she had considered resigning multiple times due to Mandelson’s appointment. She emphasized the importance of leveraging the situation to address issues of violence against women and girls.

The upcoming release of documents follows the initial batch published in March, which revealed Mandelson’s £75,000 severance payment upon his removal as the UK’s ambassador to the US. The government has highlighted the forthcoming disclosure as one of the most extensive in parliamentary history, underscoring its commitment to transparency and adherence to established protocols.

Mandelson, commonly referred to as the UK’s ‘Trump whisperer,’ faced termination amid mounting concerns about his association with Epstein. His subsequent arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office, related to alleged sharing of sensitive information with Epstein, has further fueled the controversy. Mandelson has denied any wrongdoing.
