An unsuspecting mother tragically lost her life in Sheffield after being fatally shot. She had intended to attend the Arsenal victory parade with her 10-year-old son this weekend, as disclosed by her friend and cousin.
The victim, Shanice Brookes, a 30-year-old mother, was shot near the One Four One bar on West Street before 2:45 am on bank holiday Monday. Authorities described her as an innocent bystander, and she succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
Tyler-Jay Reid, Ms. Brookes’ cousin, and K-cee Cooper-Foster, her friend, emotionally paid tribute to the young mother. Reid shared that the mother was looking forward to taking her son to the Arsenal parade, but now he will grow up without her.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Reid stated, “She’s so selfless, not a huge football fan, but she was putting that aside for her son to go to the Emirates. She was thrilled about it, and her son was equally excited, but now that joy has been cruelly taken away from him.”
Reid mentioned that she had been with Brookes just before the shooting, revealing that they were out celebrating a birthday. She emphasized, “She’s just an innocent person who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It could happen to anyone, and I wouldn’t wish this upon anyone.”
In memory of Shanice, the cousin and friend initiated a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for her funeral expenses, with any surplus dedicated to her son’s future. They expressed, “Shan deserves a beautiful farewell after being taken from us too soon.”
They added, “Shanice had a huge heart, infectious humor, and a soul that touched many. She brightened every room she entered and was deeply loved by all who knew her.”
South Yorkshire Police announced that Jemele Rhone, 30, has been charged with murder, possession of a firearm, and possession of criminal property. Deiryen Dyce, 32, has been charged with aiding an offender, possession of ammunition, drug possession with intent to supply, and possession of criminal property.
Both suspects are in custody and are scheduled to appear at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court. A 30-year-old man previously arrested on suspicion of murder has been released and is no longer a suspect.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles remarked, “Shanice was an entirely innocent bystander who should have been able to enjoy a night out in our city without the fear of not returning safely. Her family, including her young son, now confront the heartbreaking reality of never seeing her again.”
He added, “They are mourning the devastating loss of their cherished daughter, friend, and mother in the most tragic circumstances. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”
